A first aid kit is one of the most important items to pack. Its contents depend on the route and individual health conditions, but there is a universal set that every traveler should have:

  • Painkillers and antipyretics (ibuprofen, paracetamol).
  • Remedies for stomach upset (smecta, activated charcoal, loperamide).
  • Antihistamines (anti-allergic) (loratadine, cetirizine) — even if you don't have allergies, a reaction to new food or insect bites is possible.
  • Motion sickness remedies (dramamine, bonine) — if long trips are ahead.
  • Dressing materials: bandage, sterile wipes, plaster (regular and bactericidal).
  • Antiseptics: hydrogen peroxide, chlorhexidine or alcohol wipes.
  • Cold remedies: throat spray, nasal drops, antivirals.
  • Individual medications that you take regularly (e.g., for blood pressure, diabetes, etc.) — bring a supply for the entire trip.

Also be sure to add insect repellent (against mosquitoes and ticks) and sunscreen to your first aid kit. For long hikes, superglue (for temporary wound closure) and broad-spectrum antibiotics may be useful (but consult a doctor first).
