What is better to take on a trip: a suitcase or a backpack?

The choice between a suitcase and a backpack depends on the type of your trip. If you are going on a ready-made tour with minimal transfers (airport to hotel and back), then a hard suitcase will be fine. Its main advantage is the safety of fragile items during transportation.
However, for independent travel, especially with frequent moves, walking, and using public transport, we strongly recommend a soft backpack. It has undeniable advantages: changeable shape and volume. You can start your trip with a small and light backpack, and as you buy souvenirs, increase its size using tightening straps. With a backpack, you will be much more mobile — you can easily walk long distances and use inexpensive transport, which is much more difficult to do with a suitcase on wheels.
As for the integrity of soft luggage during transportation, this problem is easily solved with tape and packing film. So, if you are planning an active and eventful trip, definitely choose a backpack.
