Where is it better to exchange currency in Malaysia, at the airport or in the city?

Exchanging currency at airports in Malaysia has now become extremely unprofitable. For example, at Kuala Lumpur Airport (KLIA), the spread (difference between the buying and selling rate) for US dollars can reach 18%, and even more for other currencies. Therefore, we advise exchanging at the airport minimally—only for transport to the city or the first taxi.
The most favorable exchange rate in the country is in Kuala Lumpur. It's best to go to the Mid Valley Megamall shopping center. There are several exchange offices with excellent rates, almost matching the market rate (MaxMoney Mid Valley, My Money Master, MV Forex, and others). This is where you should exchange the main amount for traveling around the country, as well as sell any remaining ringgit before departure. Be prepared for possible queues.
In other cities and resorts, look for exchange offices (they are more favorable than banks). On islands (Langkawi, Penang), a more favorable rate is usually not in tourist areas on the beaches, but in central cities (for example, in Kuah on Langkawi or Georgetown on Penang).
Important: For exchange, a passport is required almost everywhere (original, or at least a copy or scan). Also remember that the rate for small bills (1, 5, 10 dollars) is often lower, and some exchange offices do not accept them at all. Bills of 50 and 100 dollars are exchanged at the same rate. The rate for old-style dollars is lower, and in some places, they are refused altogether.
