In most cases, it is more profitable to exchange currency in cities rather than at airports. However, there is one important exception: at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport, on the lower level near the entrance to the Airport Rail Link, there is an exchange booth with a very good rate, often even better than at some city points. If you arrive at this airport, feel free to exchange a large amount there, especially if you are heading directly to remote islands.

At other airports (e.g., Phuket) and at hotel exchange counters, the rate is usually unfavorable. It is better to exchange a small amount for initial expenses (transfer, water) and the bulk of the money in the city.

Where to find the best rate in cities:

  • In Bangkok: The Superrich exchange chain (especially the head office) offers some of the most favorable rates in the country. For detailed instructions on where to find them, read our special guide: Where to exchange currency profitably in Bangkok.
  • In Pattaya: Look for T.T. Exchange chain exchangers. They have many locations, and you can check the rate on their website ttexchange.com.
  • On Phuket: There is no single chain with a favorable rate. Good rates are often found in tourist centers like Patong, Phuket Town, or Chalong. Avoid exchangers on secluded beaches.

Remember: When exchanging at official exchange points and banks in Thailand, you are required to present your passport. This is a standard procedure. Also, check the banknotes you receive. The rate for banknotes of different denominations (especially US dollars) may vary.
