Refueling a car in Thailand is a simple process, but there are important nuances. There is no pure AI-92 or AI-95 gasoline at gas stations. Instead, there is Gasohol, a mixture of gasoline with ethanol. Follow the color of the nozzles:

  • Gasohol 95 (orange or green) — the most versatile, suitable for any sedans and crossovers.
  • Gasohol 91 (red) — slightly lower octane number, cheaper, suitable for budget cars.
  • Gasohol E20 (light green) — even cheaper, but consumption is slightly higher. Many modern cars are adapted.
  • Diesel (blue) — for pickups and SUVs.

Procedure at the gas station: There is no self-service in Thailand. Pull up to the pump, turn off the engine, open the fuel door from inside. Lower the window and tell the attendant the fuel type and amount, for example: "Gasohol 95, Full Tank." Before refueling, make sure the pump display shows zero. You can pay in cash directly to him — he will go to the cashier and bring back change. If you want to pay by card, say so immediately, and he will bring a terminal to your window.

Before refueling, be sure to open the fuel door — there is a sticker on the inside of the cap with the permitted fuel types. We recommend reading our full guide Car Rental in Thailand 2026: Complete Guide, where we detail all fuel types and provide tips for trips to remote areas.
