Answer (changed )

Yes, you can withdraw cash from UnionPay cards of Russian banks in Malaysia, but with important caveats. In 2026, only cards issued by Rosselkhozbank (RSHB) and ATB work. Cards from Gazprombank, Tinkoff, and other banks, unfortunately, no longer work. Moreover, paying directly with the card is not possible everywhere, but withdrawing money from an ATM is quite feasible.

Important! Your card's PIN consists of 4 digits, but in Malaysia, ATMs expect 6 digits. Simply add two zeros at the end. For example, if your PIN is 1234, enter 123400.

Where to withdraw and what fees

It is best to use ATMs of MayBank and CIMB. We have personally verified that they do not charge an additional fee for withdrawals. However, avoid Euronet ATMs, as their fees can be exorbitant.

The fee is charged by your Russian bank. For example, under the "My Card Plus" tariff of RSHB in 2026, the conditions are as follows:

Fees for cash withdrawals from RSHB UnionPay cards
Card currency Withdrawal fee When can you withdraw without a fee
Chinese Yuan (CNY) 4% of the amount, minimum 70 yuan If the card turnover in the previous month was at least 30,000 rubles
Rubles (RUB) 1.5% of the amount, minimum 250 rubles If the card turnover in the previous month was at least 30,000 rubles

Life hack: To minimize losses, withdraw at least 1000 ringgit at a time (if you have a yuan card) or 880 ringgit (if you have a ruble card). And try to pay directly with the card whenever possible β€” this is more profitable than withdrawing cash.

Which UnionPay card to choose

We recommend using a card in yuan. It is most advantageous to top it up through a brokerage account. The conversion rate from yuan to ringgit at Malaysian ATMs is very close to the exchange rate, making this method one of the most profitable for obtaining cash in Malaysia.

More useful details and a comparison of all options (rubles, yuan, dollars, euros) can be found in our detailed guide to money in Malaysia.
