There are two main passenger terminals at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA): KLIA (Terminal 1) and KLIA2 (Terminal 2). They are separate and cannot be walked between.

Check-in area at KLIA Terminal (Terminal 1)

Main differences between terminals:

  • KLIA (Terminal 1): The main terminal for most international and full-service airlines (e.g., Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Emirates). It has a more comfortable and spacious environment, with a satellite terminal accessible via a free automated Aerotrain.
  • KLIA2 (Terminal 2): A purpose-built terminal for low-cost carriers, primarily AirAsia. It is the world's largest airport for low-cost airlines. Everything is simpler and more functional, resembling a large bus station, but with all necessary services. Check-in and baggage drop are often fully automated here.

Both terminals offer a full range of services: currency exchange, ATMs, luggage storage, SIM card sales points, and cafes. Transport to the city (trains, buses, taxis) departs from both terminals.

It is extremely important to check in advance which terminal you are arriving at or departing from, especially if you have a connecting flight. On airline tickets and airport displays, KLIA may be simply marked as "KUL", and KLIA2 as "KUL2".

More details about the layout of each terminal, including maps and photos, can be found in our detailed guide: Kuala Lumpur Airport: Detailed Terminal Guide.
