Bang Bao fishing village is one of the most interesting locations in the south of Koh Chang. Here's how to get there and what to do there.
How to get to Bang Bao:
- By songthaew (shared taxi): This is the most budget-friendly public transport. Songthaews run along the west coast. Tell the driver "Bang Bao". The fare from northern beaches (like White Sand) will be about 150-200 baht per person. Important: Since the village is far away, drivers sometimes refuse to go at a fixed rate and ask for payment as for a taxi (500-800 baht per car). Clarify the price before boarding.
- By rented transport: By motorbike or car, drive south along the west coast. The road ends at Bang Bao. Parking right at the pier is paid (20 baht per bike/hour), but you can leave the vehicle for free a bit further away, for example, at the temple on the turn.
- By taxi: The most convenient, but also the most expensive option. A one-way trip from tourist areas will cost about 500-800 baht.
Transport life hack: In the evening, after sunset, it's almost impossible to leave Bang Bao by regular songthaew—drivers only work as taxis at inflated prices. Plan your return in advance or look for fellow travelers to share the cost.
What to do in Bang Bao village:
- Walk along the long pier, built on stilts over the water. On both sides—souvenir shops, cafes, diving centers.
- Climb the lighthouse, which offers a beautiful view of the village and the bay.
- Buy an excursion or tour for diving/snorkeling. This is the main departure point to neighboring islands (Koh Wai, Koh Mak).
- Dine on seafood at one of the restaurants on the pier. Prices are above average for the island, but the view and freshness are worth it.
- Visit the local market (Bang Bao Plaza).
