The national currency of Malaysia is the ringgit (ringgit), internationally denoted as RM or MYR. The ringgit is divided into 100 sen. This is the currency you will use to pay almost everywhere: in shops, cafes, on transport, and for excursions.
Banknotes in circulation have denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 ringgit. All money features a portrait of the first supreme ruler of the country, Tuanku Abdul Rahman. Payments in foreign currency (US dollars, euros) are not common in the country. Even if you see prices in dollars for some tourist services, you will likely still have to pay in ringgit at the current exchange rate.
Important not to confuse! In areas bordering Singapore and Brunei, the word "ringgit" may also refer to the dollars of these countries. Be careful when making payments.
For tourists, the optimal strategy is to have some cash ringgit on hand for small expenses and markets, and use a bank card for large purchases and in shopping malls. Cards from international payment systems are accepted almost everywhere.
