The most interesting and must-visit imperial tombs in Hue are the 'big three': Minh Mang, Tu Duc, and Khai Dinh. They are the best restored, most informative, and represent completely different styles of imperial architecture.
Here is a brief description of each:
- Minh Mang Tomb: Considered the epitome of harmony and classic Vietnamese architecture. It is a picturesque park complex on the banks of the Perfume River with pavilions, bridges, and ponds. The atmosphere here is very peaceful.
- Tu Duc Tomb: The largest in area. The emperor used it as a country residence. There is a large lake, resting pavilions, and even a theater. You should allocate at least an hour for viewing.
- Khai Dinh Tomb: Sharply contrasts with the previous ones. It is not a park, but a majestic building on a mountainside, resembling a palace. The architecture is a blend of Vietnamese and European styles with abundant decoration. Inside, the mosaic of glass and porcelain is stunning.
If you have energy left after the 'big three', you can see the tomb of the dynasty founder Gia Long or Thieu Tri. They are less popular but have their own charm.
We advise dedicating at least an hour to viewing each of the main tombs. We have detailed articles with personal photos and impressions about each: Minh Mang Tomb, Tu Duc Tomb, Khai Dinh Tomb.
