Most tourists and experts consider the Tomb of Tu Duc to be the most interesting and must-visit among the three main tombs in Hue. It is the most popular for a reason: it is a vast park complex with a lake, pavilions, and shady alleys that the emperor used during his lifetime. There is plenty to see here, and the area is perfect for a leisurely stroll.

However, each tomb is unique and represents a different style and era:

  • Tomb of Tu Duc: An extensive landscape park in traditional Vietnamese style, a place for rest and reflection. The most 'green' and atmospheric.
  • Tomb of Minh Mang: Strict, symmetrical, and majestic. Located in a very picturesque area among hills and lakes, considered architecturally the most perfect.
  • Tomb of Khai Dinh: A completely different aesthetic! This is a monumental concrete structure, a mix of Vietnamese and European styles (Neo-Gothic, Baroque). Inside, it impresses with rich mosaics of glass and porcelain.

If you are short on time and have to choose two out of the three tombs to visit with a combined ticket, we recommend choosing the tombs of Tu Duc and Minh Mang. They complement each other best, showing different facets of imperial architecture in Hue. The Tomb of Khai Dinh is very unusual but may not appeal to everyone due to its somewhat gloomy and synthetic appearance.

The final decision, of course, is yours. You can read more and see our real photos of all the tombs in our guides, and decide for yourself what interests you more. Start with the most comprehensive guide: Tomb of Tu Duc in Hue.
