Is it possible to exchange rubles in Hanoi?

No, you cannot exchange cash rubles in Hanoi. At least, we have tried several times in different years to find a place that exchanges rubles, but we have not been able to find one. Perhaps some individual banks or exchange offices accept rubles, but considering the exchange practice at other popular resorts, for example in Nha Trang, you should not expect a reasonable rate. Therefore, if you are going to Hanoi, we highly recommend taking euros or dollars with you and leaving rubles at home.

If you find yourself in an unpleasant situation without currency in Hanoi, you can withdraw money from a Mir card at VRB bank ATMs (not profitable, high commissions). Or you can find private exchangers through messengers to exchange non-cash rubles for dong, but be careful with them, as you can be deceived.

As for exchanging normal international currency in Hanoi, the most favorable rate is traditionally in jewelry stores and workshops. If you want to get the most favorable rate almost anywhere in Vietnam, go straight to the jewelry streets:

• Hang Bac Street, located in the tourist area north of the lake (street on the map)
• Ha Trung Street, located west of the lake within walking distance (street on the map)
