Currently, banks in Russia mainly sell US dollars of old series without a blue security strip, these are series from 1996 to 2013. Due to their weak security features and many counterfeits, they are reluctantly accepted for exchange worldwide, and Thailand is no exception. But overall, exchanging them is possible – the situation is not as critical as inexperienced tourists and the media describe.

Yes, some exchange offices do refuse to accept them because they cannot distinguish originals from counterfeits and fear getting fakes. But if one exchange office refuses, you should go to other places or banks. After visiting several exchange offices, you will definitely find a place to exchange them. The exchange rate for them is usually 0.1-0.5 baht lower, which is about 0.4%-2% lower than for new series notes. In reviews, a difference of even 1 baht was mentioned, which is already 4%, but this might refer to notes with signs of use.

This is important! The notes must definitely not be counterfeit and must be in perfect condition. If they have signs of use such as wear, creases, tears, signatures or stamps, they may easily be rejected or accepted at a very low rate. In some exchange offices, notes are even checked with ultraviolet light for mold, so do not store currency in overly damp places for a long time.
