Yes, old-style dollars (issued before 1996, without the vertical blue security stripe) are accepted in Thailand, but not everywhere and not always. The situation is not catastrophic, but requires attention.

The main problem is the increased risk of counterfeits and the difficulty of verifying such bills. Because of this:

  • Some exchange offices and banks may refuse to accept them. If one place refuses, you need to try another.
  • The exchange rate for old bills is often lower by 0.1 - 0.5 baht per dollar (approximately 0.4%-2%) than for new ones. In rare cases, the difference can reach 1 baht.

Key condition: The bills must be in perfect condition. Any wear, tears, stains, stamps, or inscriptions sharply increase the chance that they will not be accepted at all or offered a very low rate. Some exchange offices check bills with ultraviolet light for mold.

What to do if you have old dollars:

  1. Try to exchange them at major banks (Bangkok Bank, Krungthai Bank) or at chain exchange offices like Superrich in Bangkokβ€”they have more experience and equipment for verification.
  2. Be prepared to visit several places.
  3. If possible, in Russia, it's better to get bills of the new style (series from 1996 and newer, with the blue stripe) from an exchange office.
