General information about Hammamet

Hammamet (Hammamet) – one of the largest resorts in Tunisia, located on the Mediterranean coast 65 km southeast of Tunis city, with a population of about 70,000 people (Hammamet on the map of Tunisia). Lately, it has become very popular among Russians. This city is distinguished from others by the fact that it is not customary to build high-rise buildings here, so as not to disrupt the architecture of this historical place.

The history of Hammamet dates back to around 180 AD, when the Roman colony Pupput (Putput) was located here. Later, the Arabs changed its name to Hammamet. Throughout its history, wars of conquest were waged for the right to possess this territory. However, with the arrival of the French army in 1881, the situation stabilized somewhat, and from the 1920s, Europeans began to come here for treatment and rest. The city is world-famous for its thermal springs; it was initially "discovered" as a place people came to for healing. Therefore, currently the city is famous for thalassotherapy centers, which almost every hotel has. It is no wonder that the name of the city translates from Arabic as "a place for bathing."

The city is very beautiful and is surrounded by jasmine and lemon plantations. The cleanest, snow-white beaches, turquoise sea, gentle sun combined with non-boring leisure – you will find all this here. Conditionally, the city is divided into 2 parts: the old city stretches to the north and center (Hammamet Medina) and the new city to the south (Medina Yasmine or Jasmine). All the main attractions are in the old part, and the tourist center is located in the new part. Among the attractions, it's worth visiting the Medina to feel the national flavor of the city and combine this walk with a visit to the shops located there. The Medina houses an ancient mosque and a small historical museum. The most popular are the old Spanish fortress - Kasbah, built in the 17th century, from whose tower a stunning panorama of the surroundings opens, and the uniquely designed house of George Sebastian – the first European who settled here in 1920. On the territory adjacent to the house, the International Cultural Festival is held annually, attracting participants from all over the world.

There is everything for entertainment. The Carthage Land entertainment complex and water park will be interesting for both adults and children. Golf lovers won't be bored, as the largest golf club is located here. Additionally, there is a yacht club and casino, several night discos, bars, and a zoo.

Hotels in Hammamet, where to stay

Hotels in Hammamet are located along the coast on beaches. Cheaper hotels are in the central and northern parts of the city, while expensive and luxurious ones are in the southern part. In recent years, in the southern part of the city – Yasmine Hammamet, active construction of new hotels of 4 and 5-star categories and other tourist infrastructure has been underway. There is everything here, from the Carthage Land amusement park, thalassotherapy centers to well-maintained beaches, restaurants, and a promenade with a port for sea walks.
