In short — yes, a return ticket (or a ticket to a third country) is formally required, and they may indeed ask for it. Checks are not done for everyone, but selectively: some are lucky and are not asked anything at the border at all, while others are required to show a ticket even when boarding the flight. So it's a matter of luck, but we do not recommend risking it — an analysis of the situation and workable options are below.

Let's start with the main point: most often the departure ticket is checked at check-in and boarding at the departure airport, and not only at passport control already in Thailand. Airlines do not want to pay fines and worry that you will stay in the country illegally, so they often require proof that you will leave on time. If there is no ticket, they may simply not let you on the flight before departure, and it will be difficult to prove you are right.

At passport control in Pattaya and other cities of Thailand, they may also ask for a ticket — usually this happens selectively. If the inspector checks and there is no departure ticket, the matter may end in refusal of entry and even deportation; such cases have occurred. Therefore, take this seriously.

Attention! In 2026, due to the aggravation of the situation at the border with Cambodia, checks of tourists upon entry into the country have become stricter. Now they have strictly begun to check for departure tickets, they may require cash in an amount sufficient for the duration of stay, as well as confirmation of hotel or accommodation booking. Prepare for the trip in advance.

Other requirements also apply for entry: a completed TDAC is required — an electronic arrival form (not a visa, but simply a record of the country's guests), as well as cash. There is no specific amount that must be presented, but the consulate recommendations mention 20,000 baht per person or 40,000 baht per family, in any currency and specifically in cash — money on a card and bank statements are not accepted. How to fill out the arrival form is discussed in detail in the instructions on the Thailand immigration card (TDAC).

Amount of cash for entry into Thailand per person and family in different currencies (at the current exchange rate)
Currency Per person (from 20,000 THB) Per family (from 40,000 THB)
US Dollar (USD) 594 USD 1189 USD
Euro (EUR) 531 EUR 1062 EUR
Pound Sterling (GBP) 450 GBP 900 GBP
Chinese Yuan (CNY) 3985 CNY 7971 CNY
Russian Ruble (RUB) 50823 RUB 101646 RUB

Now about how to hedge if you want to stay in Thailand longer or simply not buy an expensive ticket home in advance. There are several workable options:

  • Buy the cheapest ticket to a neighboring country with local low-cost carriers, for example Airasia. Such an option often costs pennies, and it is calmly accepted at the border.
  • Make an official booking on special websites on the Internet for a small fee — services make a confirmed flight ticket booking that can be shown during checks.
  • Book a real ticket and then cancel the booking. Print the itinerary receipt, and after departure get the money back if the fare rules allow.
  • As a last resort — buy a ticket by land or by ferry to Malaysia. The land or sea route is also considered a ticket for departure from Thailand.

For example, it is convenient to fly or travel to Malaysia — to Kuala Lumpur or Penang. If you are going to Pattaya, keep in mind that the nearest airport to the city is U-Tapao, as well as the option with Bangkok airports and a transfer. Pattaya itself is a popular wintering place, and it is here that tourists most often have the question of a return ticket.

The visa-free stay period for Russians is currently 30 days, and it can be extended for another 30 days at the immigration office for 1900 baht — for the extension, a ticket out of the country will come in handy. See the list of all immigration offices in Thailand with addresses here. We also covered current cases for extending stay under the new rules and explained about the tourist visa to Thailand and how to apply for it yourself.

If there is still no departure ticket, but you need to fly, the most reliable and cheapest way out is to get an inexpensive low-cost ticket to a neighboring country and not worry either at boarding or at passport control.
