Why Have Sber and MTS QR Codes Stopped Being Accepted in Thailand?

Let's immediately dispel the main myth: technically, no one has disabled QR codes from Russian banks in Thailand. The problem is not with Sber, not with MTS, and not with the technology itself — it's simply that Thai merchants have started refusing to accept such payments en masse. And they have quite logical reasons for this.

The main one is that money from a Russian bank does not reach the Thai merchant instantly, but takes from several hours to several days. A cashier at a 7-Eleven or at a market physically cannot wait two days to find out whether the payment went through or not. They need to know the result right now, when handing over the goods. Plus, the payment might get stuck altogether and come back canceled a day later — imagine you've already left with your purchase, and the money never reached the merchant.

The second reason is that Thai acquiring banks have started looking much more closely at sources of payments from abroad, and Russian QR codes have fallen into their "risky" category. That's exactly why printed signs saying "We don't accept Russian QR codes" first started appearing at checkout counters in the tourist areas of Phuket and Pattaya, and then complaints about stuck transactions flooded travelers' chats.

Remember: if a QR code isn't accepted, there's no point trying to prove to the merchant that the payment "works." They have the right to set their own rules, and there's nothing to argue about. Always have a backup — cash or a working card.

The bottom line for the winter season of 2026/2027 is this: paying by QR via Sber and MTS in Thailand has ceased to be a reliable method. It still works in some places, doesn't in others, and it's impossible to predict in advance. So you shouldn't count on QR as your main payment method, but as a "secondary" option — why not. A backup is still mandatory. If you've come for 10 days, it's not worth playing this roulette at the checkout counter.

We've thoroughly and honestly, from personal experience, analyzed the whole situation in the article QR codes of Russian banks in Thailand no longer work: what else works in 2026 — we recommend reading it in full, there are many practical conclusions there.
