The choice between eSIM and a physical SIM card in Thailand depends on your smartphone and plans:

Physical SIM card β€” a classic and reliable option

eSIM (virtual SIM card):

  • Pros: No need to search for a store or change a physical card. You can purchase and activate online even before departure (for example, on trip.com). Convenient if your phone's physical card slot is already occupied.
  • Cons: Not all smartphone models support it (relevant for iPhone XS and newer, Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy in recent years). If something goes wrong with the setup, it will be harder to get help than with a physical card. Most tourist eSIMs do not have a phone number, meaning you cannot make or receive calls from it.

Physical SIM card:

  • Pros: Universal, suitable for any phone. Easy to transfer to another device. When purchasing in a store, the seller can assist with activation. More tariff options, especially among local Prepaid offers.
  • Cons: Need to go to a store or wait for delivery. Requires an available slot in the phone.

In terms of price, there is no significant difference. Both eSIMs and physical cards can be found with similar tariffs starting from 60-70 rubles for a package of several days. For a short trip, eSIM may be more convenient; for a long-term stay, a physical card with the ability to easily top up, change tariffs, and make calls.
