If you are going to Abkhazia, you should definitely see several of the most impressive waterfalls. Our personal top must-see list looks like this:

  • Gegsky Waterfall — the most famous one, the same as from the film about Sherlock Holmes. It effectively bursts directly from the rock, rather than falling from the top. The road to it is extreme, by jeep, but the views are incredible. More about Gegsky Waterfall.
  • Shakuransky Waterfall — in our opinion, the coolest and most interesting in the country. It is not just a waterfall, but a whole complex: a canyon, caves, the "Bride's Veil" waterfall, and a mystical boxwood forest. It is harder to get to, but it is worth it. More about Shakuransky Waterfall.
  • Irina and Velikan Waterfalls — among the highest and most powerful in Abkhazia. The height of Velikan is more than 100 meters (almost a 40-story building!), and Irina is about 40 meters. They are full-flowing all year round as they are fed by melting glaciers. More about Irina and Velikan.
  • Molochny Waterfall — located right by Lake Ritsa. Its feature is that the water becomes white like milk due to turbulence. Locals say that swimming in it prolongs youth. More about Molochny Waterfall.
  • Zolotonosets Waterfall — one of the most beautiful and powerful, but located far in the southeast, beyond the abandoned towns of Tkuarchal and Akarmara. If you have time and desire to go to those parts, be sure to include it in your itinerary. More about Zolotonosets Waterfall.

Remember that to visit Gegsky Waterfall, Muzhskie Slezy, Molochny, and Ptichy Klyuv, you need to pay for entry to the Ritsinsky National Park (700 rubles per adult). And for waterfalls in the Tkuarchal area (Zolotonosets, Svyatoy, Irina, Velikan) — an eco-fee of 400 rubles.

Also, on the way to Lake Ritsa, you will pass by the waterfalls Devichy Slezy and Muzhskie Slezy — they are not as spectacular, but beautiful legends are associated with them, and all excursions stop there. If you are in the Ochamchira district, check out Gupsky Waterfall and New Gupsky Waterfall (opened in 2023, equipped with paths).
