If you want to minimize or avoid withdrawal fees in Abkhazia, then, according to our experience, one of the best options is the Mir debit card from T-Bank (formerly Tinkoff).

Why this card is advantageous for a trip to Abkhazia:

  • You can withdraw up to 100,000 rubles per month from ATMs in Abkhazia without any fee from T-Bank.
  • After exceeding the limit of 100,000 rubles, the withdrawal fee will be only 90 rubles per transaction.
  • This applies specifically to debit cards. Credit cards for cash withdrawals are usually less advantageous due to high interest rates.

Almost all other Russian banks charge a fee for cash withdrawals at 'foreign' ATMs, especially abroad, which includes Abkhazia. Even with a Russian Sberbank card when withdrawing from 'Sberbank of the Republic of Abkhazia', there will be no fee from the local bank, but your bank (Sber) will likely charge its own fee according to your tariff.

We have explained in detail about working with cards and provided other useful tips in the article Currency and Money in Abkhazia.
