Crossing the border by car takes place through the Psou checkpoint, which operates 24/7 but with technical breaks (01:00–03:00, 07:45–08:15, 19:45–20:15). During the high season (July–August), queues can reach several hours. It is best to go at night or early in the morning (right after 08:00).

The process consists of two stages:

  1. Russian side. All passengers get out of the car and go to the building for passport control (you can send them ahead while you are in line). The driver with the car documents undergoes control in the car. They check passports, vehicle registration certificate, debts, and ask questions about children. After inspection (selective), you meet the passengers at a special area and drive on.
  2. Abkhazian side. Again passport control, but usually faster and more lenient. Often they only check the driver's documents and briefly inspect the car.

No paperwork needs to be filled out, and nothing needs to be paid (except for insurance, which you buy after passing control on the Abkhazian side).

Useful tips:

  • If there are children in the car and only one adult, children can stay in the car and go through control with the driver.
  • At passport control, the child will have to be woken up — border guards must make sure he is alive and matches the photo.
  • On the Abkhazian side, be sure to buy insurance immediately to avoid a fine later.
