What currency to take to Abkhazia and how to pay there?

The official currency in Abkhazia is the Russian ruble. All payments in shops, cafes, hotels, and markets are made in rubles. The national currency apsar exists but is only used as collectible coins and is not in actual circulation.
It is best to travel to Abkhazia with cash rubles. If you are flying from abroad and have dollars or euros, we recommend exchanging them for rubles in advance β in Russia, for example, at Adler Airport or in Sochi. The exchange rate there is much more favorable than in Abkhazia itself. In Abkhazia, exchanging currency is difficult: there are few banks, they operate on inconvenient schedules (mostly until 5:00 PM and closed on weekends), and private exchange offices offer significantly lower rates.
Paying directly with dollars or euros is only possible by individual agreement with the seller, but it will be extremely unfavorable for you. Therefore, there is no point in bringing dollars or euros with you.
Plastic cards and ATMs
Cards are accepted in Abkhazia, but not everywhere. You cannot rely entirely on cashless payments. Recently, many shops and even private vendors at markets accept payment via Sber transfer or QR code. If you don't have internet, the seller can share their WiFi with you.
You can withdraw cash from ATMs of local banks. There are no Russian bank ATMs here. "Sberbank" in Abkhazia is a local bank unrelated to the Russian Sber. Withdrawing cash from local Sber ATMs using Russian Sberbank cards incurs no additional fee (only your bank's fee according to your tariff). Withdrawing at POS terminals in bank branches may incur a fee of about 2%.
We recommend using T-Bank (formerly Tinkoff) "Mir" cards. This is one of the few banks that does not charge a fee for cash withdrawals at ATMs in Abkhazia. With a T-Bank debit card, you can withdraw up to 100,000 rubles per month without commission; thereafter, the commission is only 90 rubles per transaction.
Where to find ATMs in Abkhazia
ATMs are available in major cities, but there are few. Here are the main locations:
- Gagra: Abazgaa St., 57/1 ("UNIVERSAL-BANK"), Abazgaa St., 55/4 (Sberbank of the Republic of Abkhazia), V. Ardzinba Ave., 165 ("SUKHUM-BANK"), Demerdzhipa St., 28-A ("GAGRA-BANK").
- Sukhumi: Leon Ave., 31A, Eshba St., 31, Konfederatov St., 1, Pushkin St., 21, Lakoba St., 31, and others.

Tipping
Tipping in Abkhazia is not mandatory. In cafes and restaurants, a service charge is often already included in the bill. However, if you leave change or a small amount above the bill, it will be received with gratitude.
