What money to take to Abkhazia in 2026 and can you pay by card?

In Abkhazia in 2026, the official currency is the Russian ruble. It is the only means of payment accepted everywhere: in shops, markets, cafes and government institutions. The national currency apsar exists but is used only as a collectible coin; you cannot pay with it.
If you are coming from Russia, take cash rubles with you. There are no restrictions on import, but amounts over $10,000 equivalent must be declared at customs. In some tourist places, dollars or euros may be accepted, but the exchange rate will be extremely unfavorable, so it is better not to do that.
We advise tourists from far abroad to exchange dollars or euros for rubles in advance — in Russia, for example, in Adler or Sochi on the way. In Abkhazia itself, there are few banks, they work on an inconvenient schedule (mostly until 17:00 and closed on weekends), and private exchange offices give an even lower rate.
Plastic cards are not accepted everywhere in Abkhazia, but the situation is improving. In many shops, cafes and even markets, you can pay by transfer via Sber or QR code. Sellers often distribute Wi-Fi if you have no internet. However, you cannot do without cash entirely — for taxis, small purchases and tips, it is better to have cash rubles.
You can withdraw cash from ATMs of local banks. There are no Russian ATMs (e.g., real Sber) here — only Sberbank of the Republic of Abkhazia operates. The withdrawal fee depends on your bank. We recommend T-Bank (formerly Tinkoff) cards — it is one of the few banks that does not charge a fee for withdrawals at ATMs in Abkhazia. From a debit card, you can withdraw up to 100,000 rubles per month without commission, then only 90 rubles per transaction.
Here are the addresses of banks and ATMs in popular cities:
| City | Address | Bank / ATM |
|---|---|---|
| Gagra | ul. Demerdzhipa, 28-a | GAGRA-BANK (currency exchange, cash withdrawal) |
| Gagra | ul. Abazgaa, 55/4 | Sberbank of the Republic of Abkhazia (ATM) |
| Sukhum | pr-t Leona, 31a | SUKHUM-BANK (currency exchange, ATM) |
| Sukhum | ul. Pushkina, 21 | GARANT-BANK (currency exchange, ATM) |
| Pitsunda | ul. Gitsba, 10 | ATM |
| New Athos | ul. Chanba, 16 (near the New Athos Cave ticket offices) | ATM |
| Gudauta | pr. Geroev, 20 | Sberbank of Abkhazia (ATM) |
Tipping in Abkhazia is not mandatory — in cafes and restaurants, the service charge is already included in the bill. But if you leave change or a small extra amount, it will be received with gratitude.
