If you are going to Abkhazia from Russia, the best option is to take cash rubles. The official currency in Abkhazia is the Russian ruble, and all payments in shops, cafes and markets are made in rubles. There are no restrictions on the import of rubles, but if the amount exceeds the equivalent of 10,000 US dollars, it must be declared at the border.

Taking dollars or euros with you does not make sense. In some tourist places they may be accepted for payment, but at a very unfavorable rate. Exchanging dollars for rubles in Abkhazia itself is difficult — there are few banks, and they work on an inconvenient schedule (mainly from 09:30 to 17:00, weekends — Saturday and Sunday). Private exchange offices offer an even more unfavorable rate. Therefore, if you have dollars or euros, it is better to exchange them for rubles in Russia, for example, in banks or exchange offices in Adler on the way to the border.

Remember that Abkhazia has a national currency — the apsar, but it is not used for payments and is only of value to collectors.

As for plastic cards, in Abkhazia you can pay with Mir cards and Russian UnionPay cards, but not everywhere. In large stores, hotels and some cafes, non-cash payment is accepted, including transfers via Sber and QR codes. However, you cannot do without cash completely — in markets and small private shops it is better to have cash rubles.

You can withdraw cash from Russian cards at ATMs of local banks (for example, Sberbank of the Republic of Abkhazia, Sukhum Bank, Gagra Bank). The withdrawal fee depends on your bank. We recommend using T-Bank (formerly Tinkoff) cards — this is one of the few banks that does not charge a fee for withdrawing cash from ATMs in Abkhazia (up to 100,000 rubles per month).

ATMs are available in major cities: Gagra (Abazgaa St., Ardzinba Ave., Demerdzhipa St.), Sukhum (Leon Ave., Eshba St., Pushkin St.), Pitsunda (Gitsba St.), New Athos (near the ticket offices of the New Athos Cave) and Gudauta (Heroes Ave.).

Tipping in Abkhazia is not mandatory — in restaurants and hotels, service charge is already included in the bill. But if you leave change for a taxi driver or waiter, it will be received with gratitude.
