What currency to take to Abkhazia and can you pay by card?

The official currency in Abkhazia is the Russian ruble. That's what you need to bring if you're coming from Russia. The national currency, the apsar, exists but is only used as a collectible coin; you can't pay with it in stores.
If you're flying from abroad and have dollars or euros, it's best to exchange them for rubles in advance — at Adler Airport or in banks in Sochi. Exchanging currency in Abkhazia itself is difficult: there are few banks, they work until 5:00 PM and are closed on weekends, and the exchange rate at private exchange offices is extremely unfavorable.
Important: Direct payment in dollars or euros is possible only by individual agreement with the seller, but the exchange rate will be low. There is no point in bringing foreign currency with you.
Plastic cards and cash withdrawal
Cards are not accepted everywhere in Abkhazia, but the situation is improving. In many shops, cafes, and even markets, you can pay by transfer via Sber or QR code. If you don't have internet, the seller can share WiFi. However, you cannot do without cash entirely.
You can withdraw rubles from ATMs of local banks. There are no Russian banks here — "Sberbank" in Abkhazia is local. The withdrawal fee depends on your bank. We recommend the "Mir" card from T-Bank (formerly Tinkoff) — it's the only bank that does not charge a fee for withdrawals at ATMs in Abkhazia. With a debit card, you can withdraw up to 100,000 rubles per month without commission, after that — 90 rubles per transaction.
Where to withdraw money in Abkhazia
ATMs are available in major cities:
- Gagra: st. Abazgaa, 57/1 ("UNIVERSAL-BANK"), st. Demerdzhypa, 28-A ("GAGRA-BANK"), ave. V. Ardzinba, 165 ("SUKHUM-BANK")
- Sukhum: Leon Ave., 31A, st. Eshba, 166, st. Pushkina, 21, st. Lakoba, 31
- Pitsunda: st. Gitsba, 10
- New Athos: st. Chanba, 16 (near the ticket office of the New Athos Cave)
- Gudauta: ave. Geroev, 20 (Sberbank of Abkhazia)
Tipping in Abkhazia is not mandatory — service charge is already included in the bill at cafes and hotels. But refusing change in a taxi or a small restaurant will be received with gratitude.
