You can withdraw money from a Russian Sberbank card in Abkhazia, but there are several important nuances to consider. Abkhazia has its own "Sberbank of the Republic of Abkhazia," which is not directly related to the Russian Sberbank. However, you can withdraw cash from its ATMs using a Russian Sberbank card without additional commission from the Abkhazian bank (you only pay your bank's commission according to its tariff, and if the card is not in rubles, also a conversion fee).

The main problem is that there are very few ATMs in Abkhazia, and they are not always easy to find. They are only available in major cities: Gagra, Sukhum, Pitsunda, New Athos, and Gudauta. In Gagra, ATMs of Sberbank Abkhazia are located at 55/4 Abazgaa Street, as well as in branches of "GAGRA-BANK" and "SUKHUM-BANK." In Sukhum, there are more ATMs, located on Leon Avenue, and on Eshba, Pushkin, and Lakoba streets. In New Athos, the ATM is right at the entrance to the New Athos Cave (16 Chanba Street).

Please note: most banks are open only on weekdays from 09:30 to 17:00. On weekends, you will not be able to withdraw money or exchange currency at a branch, so plan your trip in advance.

If you have a Mir card from T-Bank (formerly Tinkoff), this is the best option for a trip to Abkhazia. Based on our experience, this is the only Russian bank that does not charge a fee for withdrawing cash from ATMs in Abkhazia. With a T-Bank debit card, you can withdraw up to 100,000 rubles per month without commission, and then the commission is only 90 rubles per transaction. Using credit cards for cash withdrawals is not profitable.

Also, in Abkhazia, you can pay directly with cards β€” via Sber transfer or QR code. Many shops, cafes, and even market vendors accept non-cash payments. If you don't have internet, the seller can share their WiFi with you. However, you still cannot do without cash entirely, as cards are not accepted everywhere.

We recommend reading our detailed and honest guide in the article Currency and Money in Abkhazia, where we have collected all addresses of banks and ATMs, as well as information on which currency to bring and where to exchange it.
