Yes, paying by QR code through Russian apps (VTB, MTS, Sber) in Vietnam is a quite profitable and convenient alternative to cash, especially for small payments during a short vacation. We checked everything and calculated: the loss from the official exchange rate is about 3.8%, and compared to exchanging cash dollars or euros, it's about 2-2.5%. To put it in perspective, for every 10,000 rubles you spend, you lose only 200-250 rubles with this payment method. This is a very reasonable fee for the convenience of cashless payment.

However, there are important nuances. First, this payment method does not work everywhere, but in large supermarkets and shopping centers, there are usually no problems. Second, you need a stable internet connection to pay, so it's best to buy a local SIM card or eSIM in advance, as roaming from Russian operators is very expensive. In some cafes, you can connect to free Wi-Fi, but this is rare in stores.

Please note that paying by QR code is not the same as paying with a Mir card, as is sometimes mistakenly written. The payment is processed as a transfer from the bank app through the Mir payment system, and you don't need the card itself for this.

If you have a long trip with large expenses (from $1000), cash currency is still a more profitable option. Moreover, at markets, when renting transport, or paying for services at travel agencies, QR codes may not be accepted, and cash will be the only payment method.
