Using the metro in Kuala Lumpur is quite simple if you understand its structure. The system consists of several types of trains, but for tourists, the main ones will be LRT, MRT, and monorail.

Main types of 'metro':

  • LRT (Light Rail Transit) and MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) — this is the classic city metro that covers the center and outlying areas. Your main transport.
  • Monorail — one line, useful for trips from the transport hub KL Sentral to the Bukit Bintang and Golden Triangle areas.
  • KTM Komuter — suburban trains, mainly needed for trips to the Batu Caves.
  • KLIA Ekspres/Transit — airport express only to the airport.

How to buy a ticket and ride:

  1. Find the desired station on the map (available in Google Maps, at stations, and in the MyRapid Pulse app).
  2. Buy a ticket or use a card.
    • Single ticket: At the machines at stations, select the destination station, pay with cash (not available everywhere) or Visa/Mastercard (UnionPay does not work). You will receive a token or card.
    • Touch 'n Go card: Tap the card on the sensor at the turnstile when entering and when exiting at the final station. The amount for the distance will be deducted.
  3. Follow the signs to the desired platform and line (pay attention to the final station direction).
  4. When exiting, pass through the turnstile by inserting the token or tapping the card.
