Hotels in Malaysia take a deposit as a guarantee — in case of property damage, use of the minibar, or loss of the room key. This is standard practice for almost all hotels, from budget to more expensive ones.

The deposit amount is usually from 20 to 100 Malaysian ringgit (RM) per room. The money is returned to you in full upon check-out, after the room is inspected by the administrator.

How to properly leave and return the deposit:

  • What to pay with: Most often, the deposit is requested to be left in cash in the local currency (ringgit). If you don't want to exchange extra money or are already preparing to depart, you can offer to leave the deposit in dollars or euros. For example, $20 instead of 50 ringgit — many hotels are accommodating.
  • Important point when returning: Staff may staple your bill to the receipt. If it's a dollar, it might not be accepted at an exchange office later. Ask to put the money in an envelope or bag — this is a normal request.
  • Upon check-out, make sure the administrator has inspected the room and processed the refund. Receive your money and keep the receipt until the end of the trip.

This is a simple insurance for the hotel, and if you haven't damaged anything, there will be no issues with the refund.
