If you have never ridden a motorbike, renting one in Malaysia for your first attempts is not the best idea. Traffic is left-hand drive, and in cities, it can be intense. However, if you really want to, you should only start on calm islands (Langkawi, Pangkor) and with mandatory safety measures.

Here is a step-by-step plan for a beginner:

  1. Choose a safe place. Langkawi Island is ideal. There are few cars, no hustle and bustle of big cities, and the roads are in good condition with stunning views. It's like a large training ground.
  2. Take the simplest scooter (automatic). Ask the rental company for a model with 110-125 cc and an automatic transmission (most often they are all like that). You don't need to shift gears on them, which greatly simplifies control.
  3. Go through a briefing. Ask the renter to show you on an empty parking lot or quiet street where the throttle, brake are, how to turn on the lights, and where the ignition lock is. Ride a few laps to feel the balance and sensitivity of the throttle.
  4. Always wear a helmet. This is the law and a basic safety rule. A helmet is usually provided in the rental.
  5. Start with short trips. First, ride to the nearest beach and back. Don't plan a long route for the whole day right away. Your task is to gain confidence.
  6. Watch a tutorial video. We have prepared a detailed video with the basics for those who are riding a motorbike for the first time while traveling.
