To rent a motorbike in Malaysia, you will need an international driver's license (IDL) with category 'A' and your passport to complete the contract. The deposit (security) is usually 50–100 Malaysian ringgit in cash.

Here's how the process typically goes:

  1. Documents. You show your IDL and national license. The rental agent may photograph them or simply copy the details. Passport as a deposit is very rarely requested, most often a copy or photo is sufficient.
  2. Contract. You will be given a simple rental agreement form to fill out. Be sure to take a photo of it! It should include the rental period, cost, bike details, and deposit return conditions.
  3. Deposit (security). Most often, this is a refundable cash amount—those 50-100 MYR. Sometimes, if you rent the bike directly at a hotel, they may not take a deposit at all. The money will be returned to you when the vehicle is returned in the same condition.
  4. Bike inspection. This is the most important step! Together with the rental agent, inspect the motorbike and photograph and video all scratches, chips, and damages. Make sure this is recorded in the contract or that the owner sees them. This will protect you from unjustified claims upon return.

Important: Insurance for damage to the motorbike is usually not included in the rental. You ride at your own risk. Check with the rental agent about what to do in case of breakdown or accident.
