For legal rental and driving of a car or motorcycle in Langkawi (and throughout Malaysia), an International Driving Permit (IDP) is officially required. Malaysia has signed the 1949 Geneva Convention, which recognizes this document.
Important: Regular Russian plastic licenses are not valid on their own. The IDP is only valid when presented together with the national license, so both documents must always be carried.
Which categories are needed:
- For a motorcycle (scooter): category "A" in the IDP. Categories "M" or "B" (from Russian licenses) are not suitable for driving a motorcycle.
- For a car: category "B".
You can obtain an IDP on the Gosuslugi portal without exams or a medical certificate. The state fee is 3200 rubles, and it is valid for 3 years.
How does it work in practice? Many local rental agencies, especially small ones, rent vehicles based on Russian licenses without checking the category. However, this is a big risk. If you are stopped by the police (although this is rare in Langkawi), the absence of an IDP can lead to a fine and suspension from driving. Therefore, we strongly recommend obtaining an IDP and not tempting fate.
