In our personal opinion and feelings after many trips, riding a motorbike in Malaysia is generally safer than in many neighboring Southeast Asian countries, but risks, of course, exist, and they depend on the location and your experience. The main dangers are left-hand traffic and not always predictable drivers in cities.

Let's break it down by situation:

  • On islands (Langkawi, Pangkor, Tioman): Very safe and comfortable. There are few cars, everyone drives leisurely, the roads are excellent, and the scenery distracts all attention. This is an ideal place for beginners and leisurely rides.
  • In cities (Georgetown, Kuala Lumpur, Malacca): Increased attentiveness is required. Traffic is dense, with many traffic lights and interchanges. Local drivers may be inattentive to motorcyclists, sometimes ignoring turn signals and rules. It's better to ride here if you already have confident experience.
  • On intercity highways: The roads are of excellent quality, but the speed of movement is high. Stay in your lane, be especially careful when overtaking large buses and trucks.

Main safety measures:

  1. Always wear a helmet.
  2. Get used to left-hand traffic. You can stick a bright mark on the left handle as a reminder.
  3. Behave predictably on the road, do not make sudden maneuvers.
  4. Do not leave food in the trunk when parking—monkeys may try to steal it, damaging the seat.
  5. There are few police, but they exist. Have an international license and category A with you to avoid problems.
