How to get to Kanchanaburi better: by bus or by train?

The choice between bus and train depends on your priorities: speed/frequency of trips or atmosphere/impressions.
Bus/minivan:
- Pros: Departs very frequently (especially from the southern terminal Sai Tai Mai in Bangkok β every 20-30 minutes). Travel time is about 3 hours. Often slightly cheaper (from 120 baht).
- Cons: Less scenic. Arrives at the bus station, from which you need to take local transport to the center.
Train:
- Pros: Atmospheric journey with beautiful views. You can ride over the famous bridge over the Kwai River (if going to Saphan Kwae Yai station). Arrives right in the city center, near hotels. Only 2 trips per day, but this is usually enough.
- Cons: Less flexible schedule. For foreigners, a fixed price of 100 baht (which, however, is not much more expensive than the bus).
Our advice: If time allows and you are not chasing maximum speed, choose the train. If flexible schedule is important and you want to leave at any time, take the bus.
Both methods are reliable. For a detailed comparison, schedule, and tips on how to buy tickets, see our detailed guide: How to get to Kanchanaburi independently, transport.
