In Thai trains, there are three main classes of carriages, divided into seated and sleeper, as well as air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned. The choice depends on distance, budget, and desired comfort.

  • 3rd class: The most budget-friendly. These are seated carriages, similar to commuter trains, often without air conditioning, with fans. Wooden or leather benches. Ideal for short trips (e.g., Bangkok-Ayutthaya for 15 baht). Not recommended for long journeys.
  • 2nd class: The most popular among tourists, divided into two types:
    • Seated (2nd class seats): Air-conditioned carriages with comfortable reclining seats. An excellent option for daytime travel. The price is about twice as high as for 3rd class.
    • Sleeper (2nd class sleeper): Similar to our platzkart. Berths (upper and lower), each separated by a curtain. There are carriages with air conditioning and without (cheaper). The best choice for night trips (e.g., Bangkok-Chiang Mai) to save on hotel and time.
  • 1st class: Premium level. Travel in a two-person compartment with its own sink. Shared toilets and shower (with cold water) at the end of the carriage. Comfortable, but the price is often comparable to a budget airline ticket.
The cheapest 3rd class

Not every train has all classes. Availability depends on the route and train number. Many long-distance trains also have a dining car.
