In Sri Lanka, it's worth trying exotic fruits such as king coconut, various types of bananas, mangoes, pineapples, mangosteen, rambutan, durian, passion fruit, star fruit, and wood apple. However, it's important to know that despite the favorable climate, few fruits are grown on an industrial scale, so prices can be high and shock tourists.

Here are the prices for some popular fruits (as of 2025):

  • King Coconut: The main fruit of the island. The juice is excellent for quenching thirst. Price on busy streets — from 150 to 200 rupees per piece.
  • Mango: Local mangoes are often small and expensive. The cheapest local mango, the size of a small apple, costs from 450 rupees. A normal large mango — from 800 rupees.
  • Bananas: Several types are found: from ordinary yellow mini to red ones. A kilogram of mini bananas in tourist areas may be offered for 500 rupees, but at roadside stalls you can find them for 300 rupees, and by bargaining — even for 200 rupees.

Where to buy fruits cheaper:

  • Roadside stalls away from settlements: Here prices are the lowest. For example, mangoes can be bought from 100 rupees per piece.
  • Bargain at markets: The initial price for a tourist may be inflated by 2 times. Don't hesitate to haggle.
  • Supermarkets: Prices are fixed and known in advance, which eliminates the need to bargain.

It's cheapest to buy fruits from roadside stalls away from settlements. For example, you can buy mangoes there for as low as 100 rupees per piece. Yes, here prices are often indicated not per kg, but per piece or per 100 grams. Prices at markets in tourist areas of Sri Lanka can sometimes be too inflated (sometimes even more expensive than in supermarkets), but here you can and should bargain.
