Getting from Bangkok to Ayutthaya by train is the cheapest and most authentic way. Trains depart from two main stations: Krung Thep Aphiwat (Bang Sue) (the new main station) and Hualamphong (the old station, often simply referred to as "Bangkok" in schedules). The travel time is about 1.5-2 hours.

Here is a step-by-step guide:

  1. Choose the departure station. It is most convenient to depart from Krung Thep Aphiwat (Bang Sue), as it is a major transport hub and connected to the metro (blue MRT line). Trains also run from Hualamphong station, but it is less convenient logistically.
  2. Buy a ticket. At the station ticket office, simply state the destination "Ayutthaya". Tickets for this route are very cheap: travel in 3rd class (seated, often without air conditioning) costs only about 15-20 baht. There is no need to buy in advance; tickets are sold right before departure. Online purchase is usually not required for such a short trip.
  3. Board the train. Pay attention to the displays and announcements. In Ayutthaya, there are two stations: the main one is Ayutthaya, and the second is Ayutthaya Phukhao Thong. You need the main Ayutthaya station.

For this trip, 3rd class is ideal. It is short, cheap, and allows you to experience the local flavor. Don't forget to bring water with you. Upon arrival at Ayutthaya station, you can rent a bicycle or take a tuk-tuk to explore the ancient temples.
