Topping up the balance of a tourist SIM card in Thailand is very simple. Even if your main internet package has run out, you can add money to your account and connect a new package or pay for services as you use them.
Top-up methods:
- Top-up cards in stores like 7/11, FamilyMart, Tesco Lotus or any other supermarket. Tell the cashier "top-up" or "refill," provide the phone number (it's listed on the SIM card packaging) and the top-up amount in baht. You'll receive a receipt with a code that needs to be entered on your phone.
- Top-up via the operator's app (e.g., My dtac, My AIS). For this, you'll need a bank card (Union Pay, Visa, Mastercard) or an account in the system.
- Top-up at the operator's service centers (dtac, AIS, TrueMove). Staff there will assist you.
What to do after topping up: Once the money is credited to your balance, you can:
- Purchase a new internet package by sending a USSD command (e.g., *104*package_code#). Package codes are usually listed at the operator's counter or on their website.
- Pay for calls and SMS at standard rates (e.g., 1 baht/min for calls to numbers of other operators).
All incoming calls on Thai SIM cards are free. Even if the main internet package has expired, you can top up your balance and continue using communication services.
