Officially and safely exchanging cryptocurrency for cash ringgit in Malaysia is practically impossible. Although cryptocurrency is not banned in the country, there is no direct withdrawal into fiat money through legal exchangers.
Online (often on Telegram), you can find offers from private exchangers or unofficial services, but this is associated with a very high risk of fraud. Based on our experience and data from tourist chats, common deception schemes include:
- Request to send crypto for "AML-check" of the wallet, after which the money disappears.
- Transfer of funds "in advance" with a promise to deliver cash via a courier who never arrives.
- Deception using the "triangle" scheme, where you transfer crypto to one person, and the courier with cash pretends to know nothing.
We strongly do not recommend using such dubious exchange methods. The risk of losing all money is extremely high. It is much more reliable to bring traditional currency (dollars, euros) with you or use a bank card to withdraw cash.
An alternative could be topping up the local e-wallet Touch 'n Go (TNG) through P2P transfers from crypto exchanges, but this is unofficial and also requires caution.
