Using city buses in Hanoi is quite simple, especially if you prepare in advance. Here is a step-by-step guide:

  1. Find a stop. Look for the "Xe Buyt" sign with route numbers. Stops can be full-fledged with a canopy and information, or just poles.
  2. Determine the needed route. Use route planning apps: Google Maps (most universal) or VinBus (official and accurate for all routes). The BusMap app can also be installed just in case.
  3. Wait for the bus. Watch for the number on the windshield. Most buses run from 05:00 to 21:00 with intervals from 10 to 30 minutes.
  4. Pay the fare. When boarding, hand the money to the conductor (usually sitting by the door). They will give you a paper ticket. The standard price for most city routes is 10,000 dong (about $0.4). For routes to the airport or suburbs, the price is higher—from 25,000 to 45,000 dong.
  5. Signal to exit. When you need to get off, press the "Stop" button or simply tell the conductor "Xuống" (pronounced "suong"—"to get off").

Buses in Hanoi are comfortable, with air conditioning, often half-empty (except during rush hour). This is the most budget-friendly way to get to the airport, train stations, or remote attractions.
