Brief guide to using the metro in Hanoi for tourists:

  1. Assess the feasibility. First, check if there are metro stations near your hotel and destination. Most likely, there aren't, and it's better to take a taxi.
  2. Buy a ticket. At the station, find a machine or ticket counter. In the machine, select English, specify the final station and number of tickets. Pay with cash (bills up to 50,000 VND). Or simply tell the station to the cashier.
  3. Entry passage. Approach the turnstile and place the plastic ticket card on the yellow reader circle. Wait for the green signal and pass through.
  4. The ride. Follow the announcements and map in the carriage. Everything is clean, comfortable, and there is air conditioning.
  5. Exit passage. This is important! At your final station, you need to not place the card, but insert it into the slot of the turnstile receiver. The machine will take the ticket and open the passage. If you make a mistake with the station, the turnstile will not open.
