Is there a metro in Hanoi and is it worth using for tourists?

Yes, there is a metro in Hanoi, but at the moment it is practically useless for most tourists. The system was launched in 2021, with new and comfortable trains equipped with air conditioning. However, only two lines are operational, and they run away from the city center and main tourist attractions.
The only exception is if your hotel is located near a station. For example, from the Cat Linh terminal station, you can walk to Ba Dinh Square with Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum, but it's about 1.5 km away. In other cases, for getting around the city, tourists find it much more convenient and faster to use taxis (like Grab), buses, or cyclos.
Network development continues, and in the future, the metro is planned to be extended to the airport and tourist areas, but it will likely take several more years.
If you still want to try riding the modern Hanoi metro out of interest, all practical information on buying tickets and routes is available in our detailed article.
