What documents are needed to ride a motorcycle in Vietnam?

For legal operation of a motorcycle in Vietnam, you will need an International Driving Permit (IDP) that complies with the requirements of the Vienna Convention, and your national driver's license. The IDP is only valid when presented with your regular license.

Important nuance: the IDP must have category A opened for motorcycle operation. Take care of this in advance when obtaining or renewing your license in your home country.

Keep in mind local realities: some police officers may pretend not to know the laws and try to issue a fine. It is recommended to carry a printout of the Vietnamese law recognizing the IDP to defend your rights.
