What is a green card?
"Green card" ("Green Card", green card) is an international contract (policy) of liability insurance of vehicle owners in case of harm to other road users. In other words, this is an analogue of our CTP (compulsory insurance of car owners), but it operates abroad. This type of insurance allows you to compensate for the damage caused by you in an accident, in case of your fault. And if an accident occurs not through your fault, then under this policy you will receive payments for repairing your car or treatment from the insurance company, and not from the culprit. After all, in practice, even if you are not to blame, it will not be easy to get a refund in a foreign country, but the "green card" solves this problem.
However, do not confuse this type of insurance with voluntary insurance (Casco). It does not apply to cases when the car was stolen or stolen, with damage received not as a result of an accident. Such damage on the green card will not be compensated. However, in this regard, there is a way to still insure yourself from such troubles - to issue a voluntary insurance policy Casco. The usual Casco policy does not apply to trips abroad, but you can enable an additional option for its action abroad. If you already have a issued policy, then most often the insurance company will take extra money for its extension (option). But if you issue a policy for the first time, you can ask to enable this option immediately, and some companies do it even for free as a gift. If you do not want to issue a hard hat for a year, then you can issue it only for the period of travel abroad, for example, for one or several months.
When a green card is required
The presence of a Green Card insurance policy is a prerequisite for entry into some countries of the world. In the event that you do not have this policy, then you simply will not be allowed to enter the country at the border, since its presence is necessarily checked.
Today there are 48 such countries, but every year new ones join: Austria, Azerbaijan, Albania, Andorra, Belarus, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Great Britain, Hungary, Germany, Greece, Denmark, Israel, Iran, Ireland, Iceland, Spain, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malta, Morocco, Moldova, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, Finland, France, Croatia, Montenegro, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Sweden, Estonia.
Where and how to place / buy
You can issue a "green card" only at the Office of the insurance company or at checkpoints before crossing the border, but in the latter case you will have to pay more than buying it at home. Also recently there were offers to issue a green card via the Internet with delivery home or to work.
The cost of the policy when issued in the Russian Federation for all companies is the same, since it is regulated by the Union of insurers. There is no fundamental difference in which company to buy it, since there is no difference in price or service.
For reference, as of December 2018, the cost of a trip by car for 15 days (the minimum insurance period) is 2700 rubles, and for 1 month - 5160 rubles. The price depends on the type of vehicle, and the policy is bought even for a trailer to passenger cars. For Belarus, Moldova, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, other tariffs are set, and the cost for 15 days is 790 rubles, for 1 month – 1050 rubles.
Do not forget to issue a travel insurance policy before the trip. Firstly, its presence is mandatory for entry into the Schengen area, and secondly, when traveling to other countries, it will allow you not to go broke on medical services if something bad happens.
