If you couldn't find the original Thai ingredients for Tom Yum in the store, don't despair β they can be successfully replaced with products available in any kitchen. Here are proven substitution options:
- Lemongrass can be replaced with lemon or lime zest. Remove the zest from one lime or half a large lemon. Be careful: if you add too much, bitterness may appear. Lemon leaves also work.
- Galangal is a type of ginger, so regular ginger is an excellent substitute. Take a piece of fresh ginger about 1-2 cm thick. You can also use dried ground ginger.
- Kaffir lime leaves provide a citrus aroma. They can be replaced with regular lemon or lime leaves. If you don't have leaves, add a bit more zest.
All these substitutes should be added to the broth at the beginning of cooking, boiled for 3-5 minutes, and then removed. Yes, the taste will be slightly different from the original, but the soup will still be very aromatic and delicious.
