There are several convenient ways to get to the Golden Triangle from Chiang Mai:

  1. Group tour: The easiest option. Popular day tours from Chiang Mai often include not only the Golden Triangle but also the White Temple in Chiang Rai, hot springs, and hill tribe villages. Prices start from 1500 baht.
  2. By rented transport: If you want freedom, you can rent a car or motorcycle in Chiang Mai and drive on good roads (Highway No. 1) via Chiang Saen or Mae Sai. The distance is about 250-300 km, the journey will take 3.5-4 hours one way.
  3. By public transport with transfers: This method is cheaper but requires time and planning.
    • First, you need to get by bus from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai (Arcade Bus Station, travel time 3-4 hours).
    • From Chiang Rai by bus to the city of Chiang Saen or Mae Sai.
    • From Chiang Saen to the center of the Golden Triangle (Sop Ruak village), songthaews run every 20 minutes for 20 baht. From Mae Sai β€” every 40 minutes for 45 baht.

It's convenient to check schedules and book bus tickets on the 12go.asia website. You can pay with e-wallets or cash in Thai supermarkets there.

To save time, it's better to rent transport for the day or take a taxi/tuk-tuk in Chiang Rai. Read more about all options in our guide: Golden Triangle in Thailand.
