Do Russians need a visa for Malaysia when traveling by ferry?

For Russian citizens, a visa to Malaysia is not required if the trip is for tourism and the stay does not exceed 30 days. This rule applies regardless of the method of entry β by air or by sea on a ferry.
However, starting in 2024, an important new requirement has been introduced: before any trip to Malaysia, it is necessary to fill out the free electronic immigration card MDAC (Malaysia Digital Arrival Card). This must be done online 3 days before the trip on the official immigration service website.
To fill out the MDAC, you will need:
- Passport details (valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry).
- Address of the hotel or accommodation on Langkawi.
- Details of the return ticket (you may be asked to show these when boarding the ferry).
After filling it out, a confirmation will be sent to your email β save a screenshot or printout of it. Without this confirmation, you may not be allowed to board the ferry or may be turned back at the border.
Attention! Filling out the MDAC is mandatory for everyone, including children. This is not a visa, but a mandatory electronic form.
We have provided detailed instructions on how to fill out the MDAC and all the nuances of visa-free entry in a separate article: All about visas and entry to Malaysia. We also recommend checking out the main guide: Ferries to Langkawi
