Is it difficult to drive in Langkawi due to left-hand traffic?

Driving in Langkawi is not difficult, even if you have never driven on the left side. The island is an excellent place for your first experience with left-hand traffic thanks to calm traffic, good roads, and the absence of aggressive drivers.
Why it's easier than it seems:
- Low traffic intensity. Outside the city of Kuah and Cenang Beach, there are very few cars. The roads are often empty, giving you time to orient yourself.
- Good road quality. The asphalt is smooth, there is road marking, and the signs are clear.
- Polite drivers. Locals are used to tourists and do not honk if you hesitate a bit.
- Almost no police or checkpoints. You are unlikely to be stopped for checks, which reduces stress.
Main rules and hacks for quick adaptation:
- Keep to the left side. The main rule: the driver should be closer to the center of the road, and the passenger — to the shoulder.
- Use visual reminders. Stick a bright sticker or a piece of tape on the right side of the steering wheel or windshield. This will subconsciously remind you which side to stay on.
- Be careful at roundabouts. Traffic on them goes clockwise (in Russia — counterclockwise). Yield to cars already on the circle, they have priority.
- Turn signals and wipers. The control lever is often mirrored. At first, out of habit, you might turn on the wipers instead of the turn signal — this is normal, just be prepared for it.
- Plan your first trips on calm roads. Start with a trip from the airport to the hotel on the main road, avoiding the center of Kuah during rush hour.
The most difficult part might be when exiting a parking lot or a secondary road — at that moment, it's easy to habitually drive onto the right side. Always pause and consciously think: "Left side."
