The Hellfire Pass Museum (Hellfire Pass Museum) is a powerful memorial complex dedicated to the memory of prisoners of war and workers who died during the construction of the "Death Railway" - the Thai-Burma Railway during World War II. This is one of the most important historical sites in the region.
Entry to the museum is completely free.
How to get there: The museum is located quite far from the city of Kanchanaburi - about 80 km to the northwest, closer to the border with Myanmar.
- By rented transport/taxi: The most convenient option. The journey will take about 1.5 hours.
- By public transport: From Kanchanaburi bus station, take a bus to Songkhlaburi or Thon Pha Phum (depart every 30 minutes, from 50 baht, travel time ~1.5 hours). Ask the driver to stop at the turn to Hellfire Pass. From the highway to the museum is about 2 km on foot or by hitchhiking. The last return bus passes around 5:00 PM.
- Combined route by train: In the morning, take the train from Kanchanaburi to Nam Tok station (departure at 6:07 AM), see the waterfall there, and then take a local bus or taxi to the museum (another ~20 km).
Important: The complex consists of two parts: a modern museum pavilion with an exhibition (open from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM) and the trail along the section of the road carved into the rock (open from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM). Allow at least 2 hours to walk the trail (about 4-5 km round trip). Bring water and wear comfortable shoes.
We have detailed this difficult but important place in a separate article: Hellfire Pass Museum in Kanchanaburi.
