To rent a motorbike in Thailand, you need special insurance with the option 'Motorcycle/Scooter Riding' and you must have an international driver's license of category 'A'. Standard tourist insurance or a policy from a tour operator DO NOT COVER risks associated with operating two-wheeled vehicles.

Here's what is important to know and check when purchasing a policy:

  • Mandatory option: In the settings on an aggregator (Cherehapa, Sravni.ru), be sure to check the box 'Active Recreation' and specifically 'Motorcycle/Moped Riding'. This will add only 100-200 rubles to the cost but will make the policy valid.
  • Engine capacity: Clarify the engine capacity of the vehicle covered by the insurance (usually up to 125 cm³ or 250 cm³).
  • Having a license: This is a key condition! If you do not have a license with category 'A', then no insurance will pay compensation in case of an accident. The insurance company will immediately refuse because you were operating the vehicle illegally.
  • Insurance amount: We recommend an amount of at least $50,000, as injuries in motorbike accidents are often serious and treatment is expensive.

Remember!!! If you do not have a license with category 'A', then no insurance will help here. Be sure to study this issue before your trip: What license is needed for renting a motorbike in Thailand.
